Pilates training can be widely used as a preventative tool to keep the joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons in an injury free condition. It can be used to treat clients recovering from work or sport related injuries that are acute, chronic or as a result of overuse. It is also an excellent tool for clients who have a sedentary, desk based work environment with poor body mechanics and muscular strains related to postural dis-alignments and stress.

Pilates can be taught in many different formats and can be tailor made for individuals.

Matwork is a popular type of Pilates and is a combination of strength, mobility and stretching exercises designed to promote;

  • correction of postural and muscles imbalances
  • increase in flexibility
  • strength of superficial and deep abdominal muscles
  • endurance
  • better body awareness in space
  • better balance and coordination.
  • spinal segmental stability

Pilates is based on the 8 principals.

  1. Breathing (in coordination with exercises)
  2. Concentration
  3. Control
  4. Centering (core engagement)
  5. Flow
  6. Alignments
  7. Stability (spinal segmental stability and neutral spine position)

Pilates techniques are a unique system of body conditioning that can be adapted to every individual from high level athletes to people with a basic level of fitness.

It can also be a great functional, dynamic treatment tool. It complements almost every activity that we do in our lives.
